세계적인 재즈 아티스트라는 수식어가 항상 붙어 다니는 재즈 피아니스트 조윤성은 아르헨티나에서 유년 시절을 보내고 부에노스아이레스 국립음악원에서 정통 클래식 수업을 받고, 미국 버클리 음대와 뉴잉글랜드 컨서버토리를 장학생으로 수학했다.
클래식과 재즈를 넘나드는 엘리트 코스를 밟은 그는 전 세계에서 단 7명만 선발하는 ‘USC, 델로니어스 몽크 인스티튜트’에 아시아인 최초로 전액 장학생으로 선발되어 활동했다.
마일스 데이비스의 그룹의 천재적인 피아니스트였던 허비 행콕이 “저 녀석이 언젠가 날 가르칠 거야”라고 한 말은 유명한 일화로 남아있다. 그는 2010년까지 할리우드 뮤지션스 인스티튜트의 교수로 8년간 재직했고, 프랭크 시나트라 밴드의 수석 피아노 주자로 활동했다.
현재까지 <재즈 코리아>, <라틴 코리아>, <Bach Renovation> 등 10장의 정규앨범을 발표했고, 루시드폴, 폴 , 윤종신, 이상순, 이은미, 등의 편곡자로도 활동 중이다.
Composer/Jazz Pianist Yoonseung Cho
Born in Seoul in 1973, jazz pianist Cho Yoon Seung grew up under the influence of his father, Cho Sangkook, a first-generation jazz drummer. After immigrating to Argentina in 1986, he immersed himself in South American music and performed at Teatro San Martín and Teatro Cervantes as a teenager, even appearing on the Radio Tango program.
In 1989, he began classical studies at the Conservatorio Nacional in Buenos Aires under Inés Gómez Carrillo, a protégé of Arthur Rubinstein. Later, he pursued jazz and classical music at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory on scholarship. Cho was also the first Asian selected for the prestigious Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, among only seven students worldwide.
Cho served as a professor at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood until 2010 while performing with the Ron King Big Band. He collaborated with renowned artists such as New York Voices, Gary Novak, Laura Fygi, and Eric Benet, performing at festivals across Asia and beyond.
